Background of the Study
Code-switching, the alternating use of multiple languages in conversation, is a widespread phenomenon in Nigeria’s multilingual society. This study examines how Nigerian users employ code-switching in Facebook comments to navigate social identities, express cultural affiliations, and enhance communicative effectiveness. The analysis focuses on the dynamic interplay between English and indigenous languages, revealing how digital communication enables speakers to switch languages based on context, audience, and conversational goals (Adetayo, 2023). Facebook comments provide a rich environment for observing these linguistic practices as they offer immediate and informal interaction spaces. The study investigates the triggers for code-switching, such as emphasis, humor, or the need for precision in expressing cultural nuances. This exploration provides insights into how code-switching functions as both a communicative strategy and a marker of social identity in digital discourse. The findings will contribute to understanding the broader implications of bilingual practices in online communication and the evolving nature of language in Nigeria (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of code-switching in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited systematic research on how it operates within Facebook comments. The nuances of language alternation in these interactions are underexplored, leading to a gap in understanding the sociolinguistic dynamics at play. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing code-switching patterns in Facebook comments, thereby uncovering the linguistic, social, and cultural factors that drive these practices (Adeniji, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the patterns of code-switching in Nigerian Facebook comments.

  • To identify the factors that trigger language alternation in online discussions.

  • To assess the impact of code-switching on digital identity and communication.

Research Questions

  • What are the common patterns of code-switching in Nigerian Facebook comments?

  • What factors influence the decision to switch languages in digital communication?

  • How does code-switching affect digital identity and user engagement?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of code-switching in Nigerian digital communication, specifically within Facebook comments. The findings will offer valuable insights for linguists, communication scholars, and digital media practitioners interested in bilingual practices and online language evolution (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to analyzing code-switching patterns in Nigerian Facebook comments. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Code-Switching: The practice of alternating between two or more languages within a conversation.

  • Facebook Comments: User-generated responses on Facebook posts that facilitate interactive discussions.

  • Digital Communication: The exchange of information through electronic media.
